April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month

April marks Parkinson’s Awareness Month, an opportunity to increase awareness about the condition and its symptoms and a time to acknowledge the tremendous strength and resilience of people living with the disease and to celebrate the contributions of researchers, healthcare professionals, companies developing therapies, family members, friends, and advocates who are supporting efforts to find effective treatments and improve Parkinson’s disease care.

Parkinson’s disease, named after James Parkinson who first reported the symptoms in 1817, is a progressive neurodegenerative condition caused by a loss of dopamine-producing neurons in parts of the brain responsible for movement. The primary symptoms are tremors, slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, and balance problems. The disease can have a significant impact on a person’s ability to function and their quality of life.

Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing neurological disease in the world due to the aging population, affecting people of all races and cultures. Currently, there are 10 million diagnosed patients globally and the number is estimated to grow up to 25 million by 2050.

While there are currently no treatments that can stop or slow the disease, there are drugs and therapies available to manage the symptoms. However, the disease is incredibly difficult to manage. Right now, there is a lack of accurate and objective data regarding the patient’s motor symptoms over a longer period of time, especially within the home environment. Therapy planning is often based on subjective, short-time observation of patients during a clinic appointment.

At Adamant Health, our vision is to enable people with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders to live full and independent lives, symptom-free. Our unique CE-marked third-generation data-analysis technology based on surface electromyography (EMG) is able to measure both invisible and visible motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease providing detailed and accurate symptom data, essential for personalised treatment that can be continuously optimised.

By enabling data-driven disease management we are supporting clinicians to make better treatment decision for their patients and helping patients to get the best treatment possible, improving their quality of life.
